ACHIEVING GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

ACHIEVING GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

As teachers, we know the importance of encouraging global citizenship in our students. We want students to be aware of the wider world and to understand their place and contribution to it. Doing this within the four walls of a classroom can be difficult, especially for those schools which may lack access to resources or be in remote locations. But we have put together a list of some digital tools that can be added straight to your ClassHive for easy access for you and your students. These tools could be used in any area of the curriculum but are also great, educational time-fillers or wet-weather activities.

Explore Cultural Museums with Google Arts & Culture

Google Arts & Culture (available as an app or on a browser) features content from over 2000 leading museums and archives and allows you to dive into different cultures around the world. Students can step inside world-class museums through Google’s virtual reality tours and explore famous landmarks via street view. Google Arts & Culture may inspire single lessons or units or be used for students to independently inquire and investigate for research projects. This resource allows for hours of free entertainment and is rich in educational content. It allows learners to explore, discover and have fun in ways you just can’t at a real museum.

Feel United with the World through Go Pangea

Developing empathy, creativity and digital citizenship is crucial in helping establish global citizenship. Go Pangea does just that by connecting students with the world through learning. Another free resource, Go Pangea allows learners to respond to questions based on cultures, history, food, science, literature, maths and so much more! Keeping up with today’s digital society, students create posts using videos, images and text to respond to the questions. They can comment, share ideas and explore others’ perspectives. Working with trusted partners including Oxford University Press, National Geographic and Time for Kids, students have the opportunity to be connected to worldly information in a safe and engaging way. Go Pangea really does ignite students’ curiosity to find out more about the world.

Global Citizenship can be an overwhelming concept to teach when bound by the walls of a classroom. But with some enriching digital tools, an inspired teacher, and willing learners, it can be addressed and achieved. Whether you use these resources for explicit teaching, for inquiry projects, or for wet-weather activities, having them stored on your Hive allows you to target global citizenship in many beneficial and fun ways without the hassle of searching for resources. Allowing students to explore these digital tools will inspire them to make a positive impact in their world.
